Throughout her career Maile Vickery has effectively supported community wellbeing and social growth.  Her thoughtful work honors her culture and heritage as Hawaiian imagery, socio-political issues, and traditions are of significant importance.  She is driven by an insatiable hunger for knowledge, a deep commitment to the empowerment of her people, and an unyielding determination to be an example to her children.

Kimo Malloe

Kimo Malloe, son of James and Adeline Malloe is the eldest of three children. In his free time, he enjoys golfing with his brother and father. The three of them have coached football at many different levels, including Pop Warner, High School and College. He has additional experience working with youth through Ke Ola Hou, a faith based youth group in Waimānalo. Which is what brings him to do the work he does for Hui Mālama O Ke Kai. Kimo is passionate in encouraging our haumāna to learn and embrace the Hawaiian culture by emphasizing growth in respect for the ʻāina and kai. He ensures various avenues are provided for our youth to support them in their future endeavors.

Kauʻi Cho, currently in a phase of discovery, is trying all kine new things! There were intangible forces at play, which lead her to Hui Mālama O Ke Kai. Being able to witness Hui Mālama O Ke Kai Keiki & ʻŌpio adventure through life and push themselves to develop skills like public speaking fuels her soul. The beauty that surrounds, the positive growth and change that happens at Hui Mālama O Ke Kai is what keeps her going every single day.

Naʻe Kaiama loves spending her time in the ocean accompanied by the lā (sun). Heʻenalu (surfing) is her favorite thing to do aside from growing and making memories with family and friends. She graduated from the University of Hawaiʻi with a Bachelor's Degree in Communication, focusing on communication in communities and multimedia. She hopes to return to school to receive a Masters in Hawaiian Studies. Hui Mālama O Ke Kai inspires her to dig deeper in the moʻolelo of Hawaiʻi, from the mountain to the sea and from kānaka to the trees. She works to provide quality ʻike Hawaiʻi for kānaka and non-kānaka by creating, partnering and developing quality content free and accessible for all.

Kawai Manaba, an avid ocean goer loves being in the water and watching a good ol Waimānalo sunrise. She enjoys cooking, playing a game of volleyball and photography. She has plenty of experience working with keiki and ʻōpio during her time with Kamaʻaina Kids Preschool, The YMCA of Kailua and volunteering with Kailua High school SBA staff to plan Summer Leadership camps. Being that she is born and raised in Waimānalo, Kawai feels blessed to work for an organization that serves her community. She finds pleasure in learning and teaching her Hawaiian Culture knowing that Hui Mālama O Ke Kai programs help keep haumāna off the streets and out of trouble.

Kamaile Hanawahine is a lover of the ocean and animals. Her journey as a softball player started with the team “Country Girls” and she excelled to play at the college level in Seattle. There she began to study psychology which she continues to focus on as she works to become a Registered Behavior Technician. Her goals in life include but are not limited to: making an impact to inspire people of all ages, establishing an animal sanctuary and living a life of self-sustainability.

Krystalyn Edwards-Calma

Krystalyn Kuliaikau’i Edwards-Calma hobbies include traveling, swimming, reading  and anything that allows her to explore her creativity. She is currently an undergraduate at Windward Community College focusing on her associates in Natural Science-Biology and Liberal arts. Working at Hui Mālama O Ke Kai allows her to learn more about her Hawaiian culture, teach and mentor haumāna involved and is able to give back to the community in which she now resides. The reciprocal relationship she shares with Hui Mālama O Ke Kai fills her cup so effortlessly.

Board Members

Kawika Eckart

Hui Mālama O Ke Kai Founder

Waimānalo, Oʻahu


Kawika worked as an Ocean Safety Lifeguard for 37 years and now serves as a Lieutenant for Honolulu Ocean Safety. He also lifeguarded for Hui Mālama O Ke Kai programs during the first 20 years of operation. He taught hundreds of students the importance of kilo (observing) ocean hazards before entering and encouraged at-risk keiki and ʻōpio to utilize the ocean as a place of healing and belonging. He strongly believes in reconnecting people back to the ocean, especially when pilikia (trouble) comes their way. He continues to steer Hui Mālama O Ke Kai in the right direction as Board of Director.
